From Proto-Tai *maːᶜ (horse), from Middle Chinese (MC mˠaX). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾ᩶ᩣ, Lao ມ້າ (), ᦙᦱᧉ (maa2), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥳ (mȧa), Shan မႃႉ (mâ̰a), Ahom 𑜉𑜠 (ma), 𑜉𑜡 (maa) or 𑜉𑜡𑜠 (maaa), Zhuang max. Doublet of เบ๊ (bée).
