From Proto-Tai *maːꟲ (horse), from Middle Chinese (MC maeX). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾ᩶ᩣ, Khün ᨾ᩶ᩣ, Lao ມ້າ (), ᦙᦱᧉ (maa²), Tày and Nùng mạ, Tai Dam ꪣ꫁ꪱ, Tai Dón ꪝꪱꫂ, Shan မႃႉ (mâ̰a), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥳ (mȧa), Aiton မႃ (), Phake မႃ (), Ahom 𑜉𑜠 (ma), 𑜉𑜡 () or 𑜉𑜡𑜠 (māa), Zhuang max, Chinese  / (), Japanese (ba), Korean (ma), Vietnamese .
