From Proto-Tai *maːꟲ (horse), from Middle Chinese (MC maeX). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾ᩶ᩣ, Khün ᨾ᩶ᩣ, Lao ມ້າ (), ᦙᦱᧉ (maa²), Tai Dam ꪣ꫁ꪱ, Tai Dón ꪝꪱꫂ, Shan မႃႉ (mâ̰a), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥳ (mȧa), Aiton မႃ (), Phake မႃ (), Ahom 𑜉𑜠 (ma), 𑜉𑜡 () or 𑜉𑜡𑜠 (māa), Zhuang max.
