From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mɛːwᴬ² (cat), of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩯ᩠ᩅ, Lao ແມວ (mǣu), ᦶᦙᧁ (maew), Tai Dam ꪵꪣꪫ, Shan မႅဝ်း (méao), Tai Nüa ᥛᥦᥝᥴ (máew), Phake မ︀ိဝ︀် (miw), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜈𑜫 (biw). Compare Nong Zhuang myauq, Zhuang meuz, Chinese (māo), Japanese (myō), Vietnamese mèo, Khasi miaw, English meow.
