From Proto-Tai *qeːnᴬ (arm). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩯ᩠ᨶ, Lao ແຂນ (khǣn), ᦶᦃᧃ (ẋaen), Tai Dam ꪵꪄꪙ, Shan ၶႅၼ် (khěn), Phake ၵိၺ် (khiñ), Ahom *𑜁𑜢𑜐𑜫 (*khiñ), Zhuang gen. Compare Proto-Kam-Sui *k-xiːn¹ (arm), Middle Chinese (MC ken).
