From Proto-Tai *ɟeːᴮ (to soak), from Middle Chinese (MC dzjeH, “to soak; soaked”). Cognate with Thai แช่ (chɛ̂ɛ), Lao ແຊ່ (), Shan ၸႄႈ (tsāae), Ahom 𑜋𑜦𑜧 (chē).
