[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰlɛːmᴬ¹ (“sharp; pointed”), from Proto-Tai *ʰleːmᴬ (“sharp-pointed”).
Cognate with Lao ແຫຼມ (lǣm), Shan လႅမ် (lěm), Tai Dam ꪵꪨꪣ, Tai Nüa ᥘᥦᥛᥴ (láem), Zhuang lem or liem, Zuojiang Zhuang liem.
Compare Proto-Hlai *tçʰəːm (“sharp”). Compare also Proto-Austronesian *Cazem (whence Malay tajam, Tagalog matalim).
