Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ʰleːmᴬ (sharp-pointed). Cognate with Lao ແຫຼມ (lǣm), Shan လႅမ် (lěm), Tai Nüa ᥘᥦᥛᥴ (láem). Compare Proto-Hlai *tçʰəːm (sharp). Compare also Proto-Austronesian *Cazem (whence Malay tajam, Tagalog matalim).
