Possibly blended from คน (kon) + ไร (rai)/ใด (dai) which is similar to the compounds of other Tai languages.
Otherwise, it might be corrupted from *pʰaɰᴬ which Northern Thai ᨹᩲ, Isan ใผ or ไผ, Lao ໃຜ (phai), Lü ᦺᦕ (ṗhay), Shan ၽႂ် (phǎue), Tai Nüa ᥚᥬᥴ (pháue), Aiton ၸ်ၞ (phw), and Ahom 𑜇𑜧 (phaw) or 𑜇𑜨𑜧 (phow) are cognate.
