Inherited from Old Burmese က္လွယ် (klway), from a *k-prefixed form of Proto-Tibeto-Burman *lwaːy (buffalo), which may be an areal term. Compare Mizo loi (buffalo), Lao ຄວາຍ (khuāi), Thai ควาย (kwaai), Zhuang vaiz, Old Chinese (OC *ŋul, *ŋuls, “southwestern Chinese cattle”), (OC *ɡrul, “kui (mythological creature)”) (STEDT).
