Etymology

Borrowed from Pali bhāsā, from Sanskrit भाषा (bhāṣā). The Burmese meaning of the term was extended to refer to religion or religious affiliation in the mid-1800s during British rule.

Usage notes

The adverbial "self" sense is often shortened colloquially to ဟာ (ha). This word is used to denote "by oneself", as opposed to "to or towards oneself"; for the latter, use ကိုယ် (kuiy, “body; I, me”), as in သူ့ကိုယ်သူ (su.kuiysu, “to himself; to herself”).
