Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (maiʼ "disfigured in face, as when crying"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. If it's got extra-Burmic cognates (as in Chinese and such), said hypothetical cognates are probably quite obscure and antiquated.”

Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (maiʼ "wanting, not full"). Luce gives Old Chinese 非 (OC *pɯl, “not”) as a cognate,[1] which is outdated given that the Chinese is a "b-negative" word. This does look like it could be an m-series negative, in which case see Proto-Sino-Tibetan *ma (“no, not”) for more.”

From Proto-Karen *mɛʔᴰ (“eye, face”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *mɛʔ¹ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-mjak ~ s-mik (“eye”). Cognate with S'gaw Karen မဲာ် (meḥ), Western Pwo မ့ၬ. Compare Western Kayah ꤗꤢꤧ꤬ꤞꤢꤧ꤬ (màethàe).
