Particularly: “Unclear if mentioned by STEDT, though no etymology given either way (o "ah! eh! ( interj. )"), while Luce 1981 (-AW Finals #1) compares Old Chinese 於 (OC *qaː, *qa, “in, at”), which does not appear particularly phonetically convincing. Seems like a natural exclamation, though if inherited, the extremely-eroded pronunciation makes determining relations difficult.”

Perhaps an old Chinese loan, from Chinese 澳. Shared lexeme across several mainland Southeast Asian languages, including Burmese အော် (au) and Thai อ่าว (àao).[1]
