[edit]From ẹ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) + gún (“to grind”) + jẹ (“to eat”), literally “that which is ground/pounded to eat”. Modelled on earlier àgúnmu (“a traditional powder medicine”, literally “that which is ground and drank”).
