From Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-gʷelbʰ- (one/same womb), from *gʷelbʰ- (womb), equivalent to ἁ- (ha-, copulative prefix) +‎ δελφύς (delphús, womb). The initial /h/ is lost due to Grassmann's Law. Cognate to Sanskrit सगर्भ्य (ságarbhya, brother).
