From Proto-Indo-European *albʰós (white). Cognates include Latin albus (white), Hittite 𒀠𒉺𒀸 (alpas, cloud), Umbrian 𐌀𐌋𐌚𐌖 (alfu, white) and Middle Welsh elbid (world).
