    From ᾰ̔́πτω (hắptō, to fasten to) +‎ -σῐς (-sĭs), with compensatory lengthening of the final vowel *ᾰ̔ψσῐ́ς (*hăpssĭ́s) > ᾰ̔ψῑ́ς (hăpsī́s).
