Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Walde derived the word from ἀλέω (aléō, “to grind”), but this is unconvincing. The formation is like ἕλιξ (hélix) and χόλιξ (khólix). The nature of the connection with Latin alica (“kind of wheat”) is unknown. According to Beekes, it is a loanword from an unknown language.
