From Proto-Indo-European *h₂érh₃trom, from *h₂erh₃- +‎ *-trom; equivalent to ἀρόω (aróō, “to plough”) +‎ -τρον (-tron, instrument noun suffix). Cognates include Latin arātrum, Old Armenian արաւր (arawr).
