Etymology

From Demotic pr ꜥꜣ (“king”), from Egyptian pr ꜥꜣ (“palace, pharaoh”).

The initial p has been reanalysed as a masculine singular definite article and omitted. Cognate to Coptic ⲫⲁⲣⲁⲱ (pharaō), Hebrew פַּרְעֹה and Ancient Greek φαραώ (pharaṓ).
