Etymology

Apparently clipping of こんにちは (konnichi wa, “good day”) and です (desu, copula). Compare おっす (ossu) and うぃーっす (wīssu) from おはようございます (ohayō gozaimasu, “good morning”). Compare also っす (ssu), an informal variant of です.
