Etymology

From 御器かぶり (gokikaburi), which came from 御器 (goki, dish) + かぶり (kaburi, biting). Up until the Meiji era, this used to be the word for "cockroach". Due to typographical errors, the became omitted. The original form still exists today in certain dialects, and furthermore there are variations of it across dialects as well.
