ドル (doru): evolution of the dollar symbol for both the United States and (now obsolete) Spanish dollar.

Etymology[edit]

Borrowing from Dutch dollar. Originally transcribed phonetically into Japanese as ドルラル (doruraru), then shortened during the Meiji period to just ドル (doru).[1][2]
