Glyph origin[edit]

Coined by Chinese geologist Li Siguang in 1934 based on the principle of ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (animal; small organism) + (spindle), a fossil organism shaped like a spindle (Latin fūsus). The pronunciation derives from the principle of phono-semantic compound (形聲形声) with (tíng) as the phonetic component.
