From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s-ŋa-j (small; inferior; offspring); southern dialectal form of (MC nye, “child; son”). Also compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *ŋa(i)k (baby), Proto-Bahnaric *ŋaː (baby), Khmer ង៉ា (ngaa, infant; baby).
