Etymology
Borrowing of Dutch Bengala (“Bengal”),[1] or of Portuguese Bengala (“Bengal”),[2] as red iron oxide was imported from Bengal in the Edo period.
Doublet of ベンガル (Bengaru, “Bengal”). The kanji spelling is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).
