音叱

Pronunciation

Reconstructed as *-ms, both because 音 and 叱 are well-attested Old Korean phonograms for *m and *s respectively and because of the Middle Korean reflex.

Suffix

音叱 (*-ms)

1. necessity-marking suffix attached to a verb stem, equivalent to English "it is fitting that..."
   • 765, 忠談師 (Chungdamsa), “安民歌 (Anmin-ga)”, in 三國遺事 (Samguk Yusa):

     國惡太平恨音叱如

     *NALak THAYPHYENG-ho-ms-ta

     It is fitting that the country will be greatly peaceful.

   • c. 1170, Interpretive gugyeol glosses to the Avatamsaka Sutra, vol. 35:

     衆生 天人^衣[之] 歎仰^爲尸 所^利尸 [爲]^{舍乙 爲音}[應]^叱爲飛立

     It is fitting that the sentient beings become ones admired by the heavenly ones.
