Etymology
Compound of 鬣 (tategami, “standing hair” → “mane”) + 犬 (inu, “dog”).[1] Compare Chinese 鬣狗 (liègǒu).

Usage notes
This term is rarely used anymore, having been replaced by ハイエナ (haiena) borrowed from English.
As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as タテガミイヌ.
