- from Sanskrit गोष्ठीपति (goṣṭhīpati, “president of an assembly”).
- from Sanskrit गोष्ठी (goṣṭhī, “assembly”), गोष्ठ (goṣṭha, “an epithet of Śiva”, literally “cow-shed”).
