First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 거티다 (Yale: kethita).

Verb

거치다 (geochida) (infinitive 거쳐 or 거치어, sequential 거치니)

  1. to cross through or over
  2. to pass through or undergo (e.g. regulatory examination)
    관광버스는 오타와를 거쳐 몬트리올로 간다.
    gwan'gwangbeoseu-neun Otawa-reul geocheo Monteuriol-lo ganda.
    The tour bus goes to Montreal by crossing through Ottawa.

Usage notes

It is sometimes used as 거치고 난 다음 (after going or crossing through something).
