Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 깃브다 (Yale: kis.puta). From Middle Korean 기ᇧ다 (Yale: kiskta, "to be happy, to be glad") (whence also 기껍다 (gikkeopda)) with adjective suffix (Yale: -pu-), but the creation is rarely perceived as such by modern speakers.
