Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Nativisation of the Sino-Korean term 링어 (, ring'eo, “Koi fish”). Due to its compounded position, the form has been able to preserve the /ŋ-/ initial of the Middle Chinese reading of (MC ngjo), which is lost in standard Sino-Korean.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈɾi(ː)ŋʌ̹]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
