Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Cheong'eo Nogeoldae (淸語老乞大 / 청어노걸대), 1765, as Early Modern Korean 몰골 (Yale: mwolkwol). The second element is (kkol, “appearance”), but the meaning of is not clear.
