Etymology

First attested in the Cheonui sogam (闡義昭鑑 / 천의소감), 1756, as Early Modern Korean 슈라 (Yale: sywula). Compare Middle Mongol ᠱᠥᠯᠥᠨ (šölön, “soup”), whence also Mongolian шөл (šöl). The hanja are ateji.
