First attested in the Samgang haengsildo (三綱行實圖 / 삼강행실도), 1511, as Middle Korean 싀집 (Yale: suycip). Equivalent to (sae, “new”) + (jip, “home, house”). First element reinterpreted as Sino-Korean: 시– (, si–, “on the husband's side”).
