Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 알ᄑᆞ다 (Yale: alphota). From 앓— (al-, “to suffer from disease”) + —ᄇᆞ— (po, adjectival suffix) + —다 (-da).
