Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as 알ㅍㆍ다 (Yale: alphuta). Probably from the same root as 앓다 (alta, “to moan, suffer”): 아프다 (apeuda), from 알ㅍㆍ다 (alpuda), from (alh, “suffer”) + -ㅂㆍ다 (buda)
