Korean

Etymology

First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 업시너기다 (Yale: epsinekita).

From 없— (eop(s)-, “not have”) + —이 (-i, suffix) + 너기— (neogi-) (> modern 여기— (yeogi-, “to consider; to think; to deem”)) + —다 (-da, ending).

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈɘ(ː)pɕ͈inɲʌ̹ɡida̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
