Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 어엿브다 (Yale: eyesputa). Original meaning was “pitiful”.

Compare the related 어여쁘다 (eoyeoppeuda, “pretty, lovely”) and 이쁘다 (ippeuda, “beautiful”).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈje̞(ː)p͈ɯda̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescriptive in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
