Etymology[edit]

First recorded in the Hunmong Jahoe, 1527, as 리어 (鯉魚). Subsequently 닝어. Includes the hanja suffix (,  , “fish”). Note that 魚 had the consonant /ŋ/ as an initial, and 잉어 is rather 이 (鯉) + ㅇ어 (魚).
