Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Univerbation of (jeo, that) +‎ 번(番) (beon, time). The vowel is lengthened by mistaken conflation with (jeo, this), whence also the hanja spelling.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈt͡ɕɘ(ː)bʌ̹n]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
