Etymology

From 행복 (幸福, haengbok, “happiness”) and the native Korean adjective 하다 (hada, “to be a certain way”).

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈhɛ(ː)ŋbo̞kʰa̠da̠] ~ [ˈhe̞(ː)ŋbo̞kʰa̠da̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)/(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
