From an uncertain conjunction + ๐Œธ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ (รพan, โ€œthenโ€). The former could be from either Proto-Germanic *ak (โ€œbutโ€) or possibly from a conjunction representing *aรพi, *adi (โ€œbutโ€); see also Latin at (โ€œbutโ€).
