Etymology

From Proto-Germanic [Term?]. Compare Old English geoht, Old High German kiioht. It is here assumed that the gender of the Gothic word was identical to that of the Old English, i.e. neuter, but the sole attested form 𐌾𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐌰 (jiuhta) (a dative singular, found in the Gothica Bononiensia) may as well point to a masculine a-stem lemma *𐌾𐌹𐌿𐌷𐍄𐍃 (*jiuhts).

The word is related to 𐌾𐌿𐌺 (juk, “yoke”), with the -h- in this word being the result of Primärberührung.
