Gothic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *tahrฤ…, from Proto-Indo-European *dรกแธฑru-. The h/g alternation (due to Verner's law) in the Proto-Germanic forms has disappeared in Gothic through morphological leveling. Cognates include Latin lacruma, Ancient Greek ฮดฮฌฮบฯฯ… (dรกkru), Old English tฤ“ar, and Sanskrit เค…เคถเฅเคฐเฅ (aล›ru).
