Usage notes
[edit]Neither the gender, nor the declension class, nor the quantity of the vowel of the second syllable is known for sure. The only attested forms are the accusative singular ππΏπ»π»π΄πΉπΈ (fulleiΓΎ) (spelled to suggest long /iΛ/ in the second syllable) and genitive plural ππΏπ»π»πΉπΈπ΄ (fulliΓΎΔ) (spelled to suggest short /i/ in the second syllable). The analysis as a feminine i-stem is based on the assumption that the word contains the Proto-Germanic suffix *-ΓΎiz, which when added to the verb stem *fullj- would presumably have given *fulliΓΎiz.
The sense βnew moon festivalβ (translating Ancient Greek νΡομηνία (neomΔnΓa)) is surprising, as one might expect a word derived from ππΏπ»π»πΎπ°π½ (fulljan) to refer to the full moon rather than the new moon. Perhaps the sense is the completion of a month.
