From Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰr̥Hanyam, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰl̥h₃-en-yo-m, from *ǵʰelh₃- (to shine). Cognate to Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬦𐬌𐬌𐬀 (zarańiia), Sanskrit हिरण्य (hiraṇya) and English gold.
