Avestan[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Iranian *daiva- (compare Old Persian 𐎭𐎡𐎺 ‎(daiva) and Persian دیو ‎(dēw)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Sanskrit देव ‎(devá)), from Proto-Indo-European *deywós.

Semantic shift from original Indo-Iranian "god". In Indo-Aryan it retains this meaning, but it changes in Old Iranian into "demon".
