From Proto-Iranian *jŕ̥dayam, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰŕ̥dayam, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr. Cognate with Sanskrit हृदय (hṛ́daya), English heart.
