Uncertain, possibly borrowed from Middle Persian [script needed] (āš), from Avestan 𐬁𐬯𐬀 (āsa) or inherited from Proto-Turkic *(i)aĺ (meal, food). Cognate with Turkish , Azerbaijani , Bashkir аш (), Yakut ас (as).
