Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. A connection to 𑀩𑁆𑀭𑀽𑀬𑀢𑁂 (brūyate, speaks) via metathesis (e.g. > *bū̆ryate/*bū̆lyate > bullaï, for which compare 𑀧𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (pallaṭṭaï)) is semantically appealing. Late Sanskrit 𑀩𑁄𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀓 (bollaka, speaker) is likely a borrowing from Prakrit.
