Etymology

The word could be related to Old Armenian որթ (ortʻ, “vine”). Furnée attributes this match rather to independent borrowing, from a common substrate origin, perhaps Pre-Greek. On the other hand, Petersson derives these words from Proto-Indo-European *portʰo-, beside *pertʰ- (“pole, sprout”).
